To carry out a soil radon test, you need to follow these instructions.
Before starting your measurement, we recommend that you obtain:
PVC pipe: 75 mm with associated lid.

Plan and order your soil radon measurement:

For soil radon measurements prior to construction on a house site, we recommend using three detectors. Two where the house will stand and one on another part of the plot. For measurements in connection with the construction of apartment buildings, we recommend using at least one detector per building.

For measuring larger plots, we recommend using one detector per 500 m2.

Do not measure:

  • ...if the soil cover is too thin (unless you get down to 0.7 meters). When measuring shallower, there is a risk that diffusion and wind will dilute the radon and you will get a misleading result.
  • ...if you get down to rock. Then a gamma measurement needs to be done on the rock instead.
  • ...if there is frost in the ground, the measurement will be very uncertain as frozen ground limits the mobility of ground radon.
  • ...if the groundwater is high, the water will prevent the transport of soil radon.
  • ...if you drilled through asphalt. The asphalt will act as a cap, the levels in the hole will not correspond to the real value.
  • ...in backfill material without the gravel supplier showing that the values are below 5 kBq/m3. Otherwise, there is a risk of transporting radon into a building.

How to place the detectors:

The measurement should be made at a depth of at least 0.7 meters, but preferably 1 meter. Use an auger or dig by hand, machines risk disturbing the soil conditions.

Drill a hole or dig a narrow trench with a triangular shape. Wait half an hour to see if water is seeping in. If water does enter - choose a new position for a new hole.

Place the detector in the supplied tyvek bag and seal.

Place the detector with the sealed bag in the bottom of a 75 mm PVC pipe and insert into the hole. Seal the top with a taped cap and seal the ground around the pipe with packed soil. Leave the pipe sticking up a bit above the ground and make a small hill so that water runs away from the pipe.
Tip: Attach the detector hanging with a wire so that the detector does not fall through the pipe.

Register your measurement:

Protocols for filling out are sent with the detectors.

When the measurement is complete:

Return the detectors as soon as possible after the measurement in 5-7 days. Find your drop-off point for free delivery back to us.
