Long Term Radon Measurement for Workplaces

The home environment is obviously very important. But so is the environment at work! The limit value for radon in a workplace must not exceed 200 Bq/m3 , and the Swedish Work Environment Authority is the supervisory authority. Read more on their website about Working with ionizing radiation.

A long-term measurement is a reliable accredited measurement.

The measurement must last for at least 60 days during the so called "heating season", from October 1 to April 30. Remember, in order to obtain an annual average, the measurement must not take place outside the heating season.
A long-term measurement must be carried out with at least one detector per floor and always at least two per workplace.
They should be placed in furnished rooms (preferably the most frequently used rooms).
Wet rooms such as toilets or laundry rooms do not count as workrooms.
Orders for less than 100 measuring points will automatically receive a discount in the shopping basket.

If you order 100 measuring points or more, we will be happy to provide you with a quotation! If you are unsure of how many measuring points are suitable for your property, contact us on telephone number +46 10 490 84 80 or info.radon.se@etn.eurofins.com

The Swedish Radiation Safety Authority has come up with a new improved method description for measuring radon in workplaces.
They have simplified the idea of how many detectors you need per floor while ensuring that a larger area is measured.

If you want more information about SSM's method description for radon measurement at workplaces, please read the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority's method description

  • Measuring must be performed in each individual building
  • At least 1 radon detector is placed in every fifth amenity room in and at least 1 detector for every 200 m2 in properties with ground contact or a basement level where persons are present more than occasionally.
  • On floors above ground level, at least 1 detector is placed on each floor with permanent workplaces and at least 1 detector for every 200 m2.
  • Always measure in personnel areas and other amenities where personnel are often present.
  • The placing of detectors can be decisive for the results. Detectors must not be moved during the measuring period. Readily place detectors when possible in the middle of rooms.
  • Do not take measurements in rooms where people are not constantly present, for e.g. boiler rooms, ventilation rooms, storerooms.
  • Read and follow the measurement instructions enclosed with the radon detectors.

If you know or suspect that elevated levels are present (e.g. known blue concrete house), a larger sample should be taken.
Prioritize rooms with pipe penetrations from the ground or other leaks to the ground, and to these adjacent rooms, may contain elevated radon levels. Also prioritize rooms on higher floors that are connected to elevator, ventilation and pipe shafts.

Do not forget to inform the staff concerned that measurements are being taken.

Note that measurements in workplaces are not eligible for annual averaging but should still be carried out in a similar way to provide reliable values.
